Our next - and last
- production of this season is The Hypochondriac (or le Malade
Imaginaire for those who prefer the original) by the great seventeenth
century satirist, Moliere. The director, Margery Alexander writes:
A cast of more than twenty...the grasping skinflint father, the
wicked stepmother, the star-crossed lovers, an arranged marriage,
the medical profession, the legal profession, a carnival, a troupe
of travelling players and a maid who treats them all with a mixture
of affection and comtempt. Add to this a redoubtable
aunt with a frying pan and a comedy night-watch team and we have the recipe for
an evening of fun and frolic - with a surprise ending!
Moliere was a true man of the theatre and knew how to entertain his audience
as well as to make them think. This adaptation by Alan Drury retains all
the life of Moliere's orginal: farce, music, dance, mad-cap chases, pathos. Moliere
was an audience-pleaser and that is what I am. those who have been in my
productions know that what I want is for the audience to enjoy themselves, for
the cast to enjoy themselves and for me to enjoy myself. So please, please,
please come and join in the fun.
