THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE
by Jay Presson Allen
Jean Brodie is a charismatic and unconventional school teacher whose job it is to turn her 'gels' into 'the crème de la crème’: life's elite. Her methods are both enchanting and inappropriate and bring her into conflict with the school's more conventional headmistress, Miss MacKay. However, Brodie is a formidable opponent who is loved fiercely by her girls and by two male members of staff. If they want to get rid of her, she claims, they will have to 'assassinate' her. Set in Edinburgh against the political upheavals of the 1930’s and the rise of fascism on the continent, the play takes a decidedly darker turn towards the end when a dangerous mistake on Jean Brodie's part makes the likelihood of her occupational 'assassination' almost inevitable.
