Coward wrote The Vortex as a very young man and it’s probably his most autobiographical play. The fashionable set of young things, would-be artists, musicians, playwrights and various hangers-on circulate around Florence, the monied, beautiful wife of a wealthy business man. But time does not stand still: Florence is uncomfortably aware of losing her youthful looks. She is also disturbed at the thought of losing her son, Nicky, to an empty-headed girl, unworthy of him ….
