News about our auditions for Butley by Simon Gray directed by Pippa Redmayne which runs from 6th – 13th May
Butley by Simon Gray was first staged in 1971 and was directed by Harold Pinter who went on to further direct seven other plays by Simon Gray. The role of Ben Butley was first played by Alan Bates. The play is set in 1970’s in a university in London. The action takes place over the period of one day during which Butley faces the ultimate breakdown of his marriage and his intense friendship with Joey. As Pinter puts it “The extraordinary thing about Butley is that the play gives us a character who hurls himself towards destruction while living in the fever of his intellectual hell, with a vitality and brilliance known to few of us.” In Butley Gray creates a complex character who hides behind his prevarication. Gray’s use of quick, verbal comedy further emphasises the tragedy of a man whose life is falling apart.
